In the 1860s, Aurora, a mining boom town in western Nevada, was home to a Chinese population for which history is mute. At one point, the community comprised around 10,000 people, making it one of the largest towns in Nevada. After the gold ran out, Aurora became a ghost town and eventually the brick buildings were torn down. Written history doesn’t tell us much about the Chinese people there, but the physical record in the ground might help to tell that story. Excavations by the US Forest Service PIT Program are bringing that story to light.
